With diamonds setting term jewellers describe the way a diamonds is mounted into the precious metal - gold, platinum, silver. There are several ways a diamond could be set.

Claw Set
The diamonds are held in place by claws. Generally 4 or 6 claws are used.

Rub Over Set
The diamonds are placed "in" the precious metal and are surrounded by it.

Channel Set
The diamonds are set in a row with a bar of precious metal on either side.

Pave Set
There are many diamonds set into the precious metal. Usually these are dainty diamonds.
